About the event
In February of 1995, Mike and Jeanne Bammann along with the Gents Auto Club, suggested to Mayor Lydia Reid reviving the cruising tradition.
A committee was put together and the event was planned for August of that year.
The first annual Heart of the City Cruise-In was held on the square in downtown Mansfield on August 26, 1995. 300-400 cars participated.
At the 2002 Heart of the City Cruise In, “Hemi Under Glass,” created by Bob Riggle who grew up in Mansfield was featured. Upstairs/Downstairs British Automotive invited their customers to bring in their classic cars, including British sports cars from the 1950’s and classical Rolls Royces who came in and mingled with car show participants and spectators.
During the 2003 Heart of the City Cruise-In, car enthusiasts Brandon and Kristen McDaniel were married during the car show.
At the 2004 Heart of the City Cruise-In, Steve Cobb’s Weidner Motors, Auto Essentials, and the News Journal raffled off a customized 2002 Pontiac
Sunfire with proceeds benefiting United Way of Richland County.
At the 2007 Heart of the City Cruise-In, a custom car was built by Franklin Body Shop that was displayed at the car show and then raffled off.
In 2008, the Heart of the City Cruise-In car owners and spectators, along with local businesses, raised over $4,000 cash and truckloads of toys for Toy Time, a local organization that collects refurbished toys for over 2000 needy children in our area.
2023 marks the 26th anniversary of the Heart of City Cruise-In. The number of cars entered into the show has increased each and every year since it began. Featured entertainment over the years has included many of Mansfield’s very own musicians who were born and/or raised here and have made it big in the music industry such as Ohio Express and Music Explosion. Most of this year’s entertainment is from Mansfield to help us celebrate our 26th year of the Heart of the City Cruise-In.
